About (m)E
Good design, to me, is not just a matter of appearance. Long ago, I realized that I wanted to be able to create entire experiences beyond the 2D. That is why I pursued a formal education in both multimedia design and computer science. I wanted to marry form to function in order to create things that represented the way I see the world.
I am a generalist by nature. I’m not one of those people who have spent their lives devoted to one subject or trade. I kind of like that too. I like to learn and explore. I’ve never really bought into the idea that people are either “left-brained” or “right-brained. It always seemed vaguely insulting to me- this idea that you have to choose a box to cram yourself into early on and stay there. That you must be either creative or analytical. Why? Aren’t the best things a synthesis of both?
I am a small person, in a small town, in the middle of nowhere. For now, at least, I kind of like it that way. I have not led a straight line of a life. I haven’t always worked in design, or art, or “with computers”. I have worked for large companies and small business, in tiny towns and large cities. I have been a manager, a grunt, and occasionally an owner. I have taken the lessons and experiences from all of those roles to form myself into a well-rounded individual with vision, excellent soft skills, and a killer work ethic.
Working for small businesses and non-profits in various roles has been one of my more rewarding experiences. When funding and staff are limited, every single employee must wear different hats. It’s a great way to test your own limits. If you are an ambitious person with vision or someone that likes a challenge, well then if something is going to get done, chances are you are going to have to learn to do it yourself. I relished the opportunities to learn and still do. It is a mentality that definitely keeps me from getting bored!
